"The entire universe is flowing with the metaphors and symbols of design."

ictor Kinza (b. Krivokhizha) was born in the village of Belopolye in the Ukraine. After graduating from high school, he worked as a commercial artist and studied privately with artists in Moscow, Russia. In 1979 he completed a degree at the prestigious Mukhin Art Institute in St. Petersburg. Many of his pictures and designs are inspired by traditional Russian styles and by the mythology of many cultures. The attempt to combine the old with the new and to join emotional expressiveness with peaceful contemplation is a hallmark of his work.

is engravings are created in the traditional LUBOK style, a Russian folk art, and printed by the simplest method - using the back of a spoon and colored by hand. The function of line in Kinza's engraving is to signify the essential aspect of things while color is a vehicle of emotion. His prints are part of the Russian lubok collection of the National (formerly Imperial) Public Library of St. Petersburg, the largest collection of its kind. His prints were included in a 1990 exhibit at the Library called "The Avant-garde and Rusian Graphic Tradition," which displayed works of the greatest Russian artists of this century.

inza's paintings and engravings can be found in private collections in Germany, Austria, Japan, Italy and the United States. His work is also included in The Norton and Nancy Dodge Collection at Rutgers University. At present, he is living and working in Washington, D.C. and is creating works that express what he sees as the spiritual essence of all things. "The interrelationship between cultures can be seen through art. I am thankful that I can create in a new country," says Kinza.
